CHARRETTE PLANNING AND THE PUBLIC PROCESS
FOR REAL ESTATE DEVELOPMENT
EXECUTIVE EDUCATION COURSE OFFERED BY THE KNIGHT PROGRAM IN COMMUNITY BUILDING ON MARCH 2-4, 2005

January 19, 2005  Charrette Planning and the Public Process for Real Estate Development, held March 2-4, 2005 on the Coral Gables campus of the University of Miami, is an intensive introduction to the subject and part of a series of executive education courses offered by the Knight Program in Community Building at the University of Miami School of Architecture that combines real estate development with the School of Architecture’s expertise in New Urbanism.

Charrette Planning and the Public Process for Real Estate Development explores the role of the public process in community planning and real estate development, focusing on charrettes (public design workshops). The seminar addresses how best to organize the public process and the most effective ways to conduct a charrette. Participants should include anyone who wants to learn about the collaborative planning process, including elected officials, planning staff, developers, and concerned citizens.

The course is offered in conjunction with the National Charrette Institute (NCI) and organized as two modules: an introductory one-day course with open enrollment followed by an intensive two-day course limited to 35 participants. Upon completion of the course (parts I and II), attendees are certified by NCI as charrette planners.

Part I, Introduction to Dynamic Planning: The Charrette in Context, takes place March 2. This one-day seminar provides an overview of the NCI Dynamic Planning process, followed by a panel featuring charrette planners from leading new urbanist design firms.  Part II, Continuing Dynamic Planning: Professional Tools & Techniques, takes place March 3-4 and covers the fundamentals of designing and running a successful charrette. The lead course instructor is Bill Lennertz, executive director of the National Charrette Institute.

The course fee for Part I is $150 ($180 after February 18); for Parts I and II it is $750 ($780 after February 18). Checks or money orders should be made payable to University of Miami. This course awards AIA Continuing Education Learning Unit hours through AIA Miami.
