
Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU X), June
13-16, 2002 (Miami Beach, Florida)
The Knight Fellows attended the annual Congress
for the New Urbanism (CNU), held in Miami Beach. This year's Congress focused on
the issue of retrofitting post-war suburbia, and attempted to articulate
strategies for the hundreds of first ring suburbs seeking walkable, urbane
downtowns. In addition to attending conference seminars and lectures, the Knight
Fellows presented a session on the Knight Program's 2001 Beall's Hill charrette
in Macon, Georgia.
Knight Program Fellows and faculty members also
lectured and moderated discussions and panels:
- Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, dean of the
University of Miami School of Architecture, moderated the discussion "Cultural
Urbanism: The Diversification of American Suburbs."
- Rick Hall (KF '01) was a presenter for
"Place-Making with Regional Street Networks."
- Lee Sobel (KF '01) moderated the panel
discussion "Greyfield Development."
- Ben Starrett (KF '01) moderated the panel
discussion "The State's Role in Growth Management and Planning."
- Dhiru Thadani (FK '01) moderated the
discussions "From Research Park to Community" and "The Role of Architecture in
Neighborhood Revitalization."
- Laurie Volk (KF '02) presented the talks "The
Market for New Urbanism" and Understanding the Development and Market Power of
New Urbanism." She also participated in the panel "Making First-Ring Suburbs
Competitive."
