Other 2003 Knight Program Activities

3.6 - 3.9.03 – Charles Bohl (Knight Program director) gives presentation at the Smart Growth Summit in Memphis, Tennessee, organized by Carol Coletta (KF ’03).

03.18.03 – Rick Hall (KF ’01), Peter Swift (KF ’02), and Rick Chellman (KF ’03) present the audio conference “Context Sensitive Design” on new street design and traffic engineering approaches to transportation planning; other Knight Fellows participate online.

 03.19.03 – Charles Bohl gives a presentation and a book signing for his book Place Making: Developing Town Centers, Main Streets, and Urban Villages (ULI, 2002) at Books & Books in Coral Gables, Florida.

 04.01 - 04.06.03 – Charles Bohl, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk (School of Architecture dean), and Peter Swift (KF ’02) attend and give presentations at the first Council for European Urbanism even in Brussels and Brugges, Belgium. The event marks the formation of the Council for European Urbanism and is attended by representatives from throughout Europe and the U.S. The event will be the topic of the next Council Report, published by the Knight Program.

 04.10 - 04.11.03 – Planning session for The New Urbanism Reader attended by co-editors Charles Bohl, Andrιs Duany (co-principal, Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company and co-founder of the Congress for the New Urbanism), and Dr. Emily Talen (University of Illinois – Champaign-Urbana). This book will be a comprehensive reader used as the basis for a curriculum on community building and New Urbanism.

 04.12 – 04.15.03 – Charles Bohl and Ken Hughes (KF ’01) attend and give presentations at the International Making Cities Livable Conference in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

 04.23 - 04.24.03 – The Knight Program, the School of Architecture, and the Medical School co-sponsor a visit by Dr. Felton Earles to discuss joint curriculum and research initiatives bridging architecture, public health, and the social sciences.

 04.24.03 – Charles Bohl delivers keynote presentation at the Fourth Annual Retailer One-On-One conference in Orlando, Florida.

 04.30.03 – Charles Bohl delivers keynote address at the Southeast Regional Urban Land Institute Mixed-Use Development Conference in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

 04.30 – 05.02.03 – Charles Bohl and Pamela Kramer (KF ’03) attend and participate in the national meeting of LISC in Miami, Florida.

05.23.03 – Coatesville, Pennsylvania is selected as the site for the 2003 Knight Program charrette.

05.27 – 05.30.03 – Charles Bohl and the four 2003 Knight scholars participate as one of four planning and design teams in the Downtown Macon, Georgia Preservation Development Initiative sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation with funding from the Knight Foundation and organized by New Town Macon. The Knight Program team produces an extensive plan for the “urban loop” of proposed street design changes and development connecting the downtown to the waterfront, the historic College Street corridor, the Mercer campus and the Beall’s Hill neighborhood, reinforcing the 2001 Knight charrette, which focused on Beall’s Hill.

05.31 – 06.05.03 – Charles Bohl presents two lectures at the Urban Streets Conference in Stockholm, Sweden.

07.16 – 07.18.03 – Knight Program makes pre-charrette study visit to Coatesville, Pennsylvania. 2003 Knight Fellows Kevin Klinkenberg, Howard Katz, Michelle Robinson and Stu Sirota accompanied Charles Bohl and Kim Pou (Knight Program Administrator).

09.11 – 09.14.03 – Charles Bohl presents at the Place Making Conference in Reston Town Center, Virginia; individual Knight Program Fellows participate in the first Smart Code Seminar in Gaithersburg, Maryland at the Kentlands, the ULI Place Making conference, Railvolution in Atlanta and other events in conjunction with their Knight fellowship research initiatives.

 09.15 – 09.16.03 – Knight Program makes second pre-charrette study visit to Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Charles Bohl is joined by Jaime Correa (director of the Suburb and Town Design Program at the School of Architecture) and 2003 Knight Fellows Jai Jennifer, Lolly Barnes, Ken Driggers and Michelle Robinson.
