AREA OF EXPERTISE: Interdisciplinary civil
engineering, architecture, and planning for New Urbanist projects
BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE:
As a civil engineer and a registered

years Tony has created the initial engineering layout for scores of
mixed-use TND projects in 15 states.
In addition to TND and New Urbanism, Tony has worked as an urban design
consultant to William McDonough & Partners, world-renowned leaders in the
green-building and sustainable design movement, on projects in Michigan,
Hawaii, South Carolina, and Virginia. Tony is also a founding principal of
Orange Architects, an architectural practice. He has lectured at several
universities and teaches site planning to graduate students in the
Department of City and Regional Planning at UNC-Chapel Hill.
RESEARCH INTEREST:
Tony is preparing a draft undergraduate and/or graduate curriculum,
focused on design, planning, and infrastructure for sustainable communities.
The program will be targeted to individuals pursuing a variety of career
interests both within and beyond the traditional design professions. As a
test case, Tony will evaluate the potential for such a program within the
Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University.
