Consulting with local governments and state agencies on urban
planning, economics, and design
BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE:
Marie is an urban economist by training but currently her work focuses on how urban design
contributes to economic and environmental sustainability. She is a founder
and the director of the Florida Public Officials Design Institute at Abacoa,
a new program created in 2002 that is dedicated to providing public
officials with hands-on design training specific to their communities. The
Design Institute's participating officials learn how to create distinctive
public spaces through design and gain a renewed ability to influence
development in their communities. Before
the university research center took center stage in her career, Marie was
the economist planner for the City of
Boca Raton.
She also taught graduate students in FAU’s College of Urban and Public
Affairs for several years. She
is the immediate past president
of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association, a 2,700 member
professional organization, and she currently chairs the Committee on
Florida's Growth Management Review. She
served on the Executive Committee of the
national APA’s Chapter Presidents’ Council. In her work as a researcher she
has directed over thirty research grants worth over $1.6 million in areas of
planning, infill and redevelopment, urban economics, education, housing,
transportation, environmental, and innovative financing.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Through her Knight Program
Fellowship, Marie intends to create a stylebook or manual so that other
regions can develop similar programs to the Design Institute that she
founded and directs.
