MARIE L. YORK
Jupiter, Florida

AFFILIATION: Associate Director for Northern Campuses,  Center for Urban and Environmental Solutions, Florida Atlantic University

AREA OF EXPERTISE: Consulting with local governments and state agencies on urban planning, economics, and design

BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE: Marie is an urban economist by training but currently her work focuses on how urban design contributes to economic and environmental sustainability. She is a founder and the director of the Florida Public Officials Design Institute at Abacoa, a new program created in 2002 that is dedicated to providing public officials with hands-on design training specific to their communities. The Design Institute's participating officials learn how to create distinctive public spaces through design and gain a renewed ability to influence development in their communities. Before the university research center took center stage in her career, Marie was the economist planner for the City of Boca Raton. She also taught graduate students in FAU’s College of Urban and Public Affairs for several years. She is the immediate past president of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association, a 2,700 member professional organization, and she currently chairs the Committee on Florida's Growth Management Review. She served on the Executive Committee of the national APA’s Chapter Presidents’ Council. In her work as a researcher she has directed over thirty research grants worth over $1.6 million in areas of planning, infill and redevelopment, urban economics, education, housing, transportation, environmental, and innovative financing.

RESEARCH INTERESTS: Through her Knight Program Fellowship, Marie intends to create a stylebook or manual so that other regions can develop similar programs to the Design Institute that she founded and directs.
